Plaid As Hell featuring Max Kaplan

It was time for me to step behind the camera for a bit and feature one of my stylish friends Max Kaplan. To show us how to rock a plaid shirt this fall, Max and I put together a couple of looks to get you inspired to go plaid and stash away your summer gingham.

Every man should own a variety of plaids shirts that they can wear year-round, however; plaid shirts are synonymous with men’s fall style (and women’s too). In early fall, a great way to go casual is to pair a plaid shirt with an off white or white pant. Yes, wear white after Labor Day, who really gives a hell if you do. Wearing a plaid shirt does not mean that you have to look like a lumberjack in route to chop down some trees. Max shows us that a well-tailored plaid shirt and relaxed chinos can be an everyday casual outfit to throw on and go about your day.

Give it that old college try. Go for a nice tweed blazer and a plaid shirt and don’t look back. With a classic look like this you will be ready to teach philosophy to a class of co-eds or go to the pub and throw back a few beers with your buddies. Pair tweed and plaid together, specifically because of tonal color properties and opportunities to layer your look to accommodate the rapidly change temperatures.

Tips to winterizing or “late-falling” this look up

  • No need to add your heavy winter coat when the weather gets cooler. Add a heavy scarf with a pop of color and you look will continue to be stylish and you will stay warm.
  • A nice pair of leather earth-toned gloves will complete this outfit and keep your hands warm too.
  • A  solid color cardigan is a great complementary piece to this look as well.

Knit ties, cords and wingtip shoes are always great pieces to combine when dressing up, or down, a plaid shirt look. If you are in your 1st year of college and want to catch the eye of someone special in your class, be sure to throw on an outfit like this for that 8 am psychology course. The slight attention to detail in fit and accessories will show that you care about how you look and the nonchalant sleeve roll, loosely tied knit tie and worn-in shoes show that you are not too into yourself to just relax.

Style Tips:

  • Tuck in your shirt. As you can see, Max tucked his shirt in with all of these looks and his style still gives off a relaxed vibe
  • Knit ties and other texture ties are a great complement to a plaid shirt because both have a more rugged and textured quality
  • A tailored fit shirt (or slimmer) works the best for plaids because you will lose the air of the lumberjack and look more collegiate.

Definitely love plaid, not just for fall, but all year round. The tweed blazer, plaid shirt and jeans combo is point! My eye is definitely on the plaid shirt in the first look. I feeling that contrast of navy, with red and white lines. Great looks overall!

Always happy to see you drop by. I agree that plaid is a year round staple. I hope all is well.
