Bold Blazer Volume IV: Mastering The Teal Blazer

(all text in Burgundy is clickable)

The summer season is coming to a close, however; you still have to time to rock a “go-to-hell” type of cotton blazer. Target released the Mossimo Black line for men a few months ago, with some extremely bold and eye catching colors. Boasting a more tailored fit, Mossimo Black was set to be the introduction of modern-tailoring for Target’s flagship brand. Needless to say, this campaign with bright color suits/separates did receive mixed reviews on the web, so of course I decided to give the blazer a run.

Initially, I purchased (gift from the wife) a size medium in this blazer (that’s my typical off the rack size). When it arrived, the sleeves were too long and the fit (measured at a 36, when most mediums will start their measurements at a 32 inch waist) of the torso was not as “tailored” as perceived from the web. Originally priced at $50, I didn’t see it fit to have it tailored because the end cost would have put this blazer over$100. With Target’s efficient in-store return policy, I exchange this blazer for a small. Once it arrived the length of the sleeves and waist measurement were on point, but, slightly snug in the shoulders (but, I can live with that).

Style Tips:

  • With any bold blazer, white chino/denim and dark denim pair well.
  • Pairing this with white chino/jeans work best for the spring/summer months
  • Incorporating other pieces in the same color family will add some color consistency (see nylon belt).
  • Don’t go overboard in terms of patterns when pairing tops with this type of blazer
  • It’s a cotton blazer, embrace the wrinkles. Push of the sleeves.
  • T-shirts and tanks are the perfect complement to a cotton blazer

Benefits of this blazer

  • The fabric is light and breathable
  • The colors are eye catching (so if you are looking to get noticed, you’ve found the right blazer).
  • Functional Buttons on the sleeves
  • Double-vented (referring to the back opening)

Did you purchase yours online or did you purchase in store? Yours look a little small on you. I wonder if the medium will be that way on me. I am a 40R.

      Hi Jason,

They are only available for purchase online. The one I am wearing is a small. I originally purchased the medium, however; the sleeves were way too long and the waist was way too big. The medium measure closer to someone that is a 40R. I am a 38R normally.

Ah, the small-ish fit kinda makes it look like a blouse around the shoulders! I’m a pretty small guy so I also have to deal with shopping in between small and medium sizes, the wrong fit can kill certain pieces. I’m loving the Bold Blazer concept though.

Yeah, that was the risk of sizing down on this one. You can buy the medium and tailor it. I just wasnt in the mood.

Gotcha. Hell, either way it’s serving it’s purpose, looking killer. Maybe I’ll build up my style and courage enough to unleash it on this part of the country by next spring.

PS – Really appreciate the links to each item in the pic descriptions, priceless for us Men’s Style noobs.

I dig the looks regardless of the size of your jacket. I’m kinda surprised they have functional buttons on the sleeves, though.

I’m 5’7 with a muscular built. I was wondering what size of the jacket should i get??? i’m willing to get it tailored, but i’m just worried that it will be too long on me. I usually wear a 40 or 42 short all depends on the brand.

    • September 2, 2012 at 5:04 PM #

      Hi Martin,

Get the medium. Tell you tailor that you still want the buttons on the sleeves functional.

I’m about 5:11 musclar built but I’m 32 waist so do you think the medium would be cool for my waist size

    • September 11, 2012 at 12:12 PM #

The medium would be a perfect fit for you!
